Slide scanning

11 Nov 2016

It is not uncommon for our parents or grandparents to have stored old slides up in the loft or spare bedroom, often never to be viewed again, which is such a shame.

This was certainly the case with my parents and I decided to do something about it.

As this year was their diamond (60th) wedding anniversary I thought it would be nice to make a self-publishing book to celebrate the event . It was quite a job collecting some 3,000 slides from their loft then sifting through and choosing those that were worth scanning, but it was well worth it.

Using Technofile's scanning service, I had the slides scanned in raw format. Just about all the old slides scanned were Kodachrome, which gives a very blue tinge to the digital image. However, because I had the slides scanned in raw I was able to use Lightroom presets to get a much better white balance. That said, I still used a preset which reflects that the Kodachrome digital images were original Kodachromes.

From the scans, I was able to choose the images, enhance them in Lightroom and upload the book to Blurb for printing out. Blurb did a great job and the result was a beautiful coffee table book, which my parents loved.
